The premise

There is only one rule.

Leah Mercer expects a quiet stay in a beautiful London house.

Keep it immaculate. Follow the owner's instructions. Enjoy a few uneventful nights alone.

If someone knocks three times after dark, do not answer the door.

At first, Leah can laugh it off.

Then the knocking starts.

The rule

Knock.Knock.Knock.

If someone knocks three times after dark, don't answer the door.

The terrifying part isn't knowing that something may be outside. It's not knowing who it is, and how badly you want to find out.

The fear

You know the knock is coming.

You just don't know when.

Slow-burn tension. Familiar voices in the wrong place. A home that stops feeling private. Memories that refuse to stay buried.

And a question that becomes more dangerous the closer you get to answering it.

Read the opening

Just three knocks.

By half past nine, almost everything Leah Mercer owned was inside cardboard.

The flat looked larger without her in it.

That was the first cruel thing about leaving. The second was how little evidence a person left once their possessions had been boxed.

Her phone vibrated on the windowsill. A message from Priya contained a house-sitting listing in De Beauvoir Town. Ten nights. References required. £1,200.

The photograph showed a beautiful London house: dark brick, cream-painted stone, black iron railings and a glossy front door.

Leah looked at the listing again.

She could work. She could be alone. She could earn enough to get through the eleven-day gap before her new flat was ready.

She opened Vivienne Harcourt's message.

For some reason, before replying, she looked once more at the photograph of the house.

At the top of the short stone steps was a closed front door painted so dark it was almost black.

Leah typed:

When can I see it?
